Snakes ,spiders and Bird Island
We have been here 10 weeks and you get lulled into a false sense of security due to the sunny skies and palm tree views , this week we had a reminder of what lies in the jungle 300 feet away. We were driving back from town down a little lane we hadn’t used before and i saw what i thought was someones tyre that had shredded the whole way across the road ….well as we got closer i breaked hard and this tyre transformed into a snake which i would estimate between 7-9 feet long, i looked out my side window as it slowly slithered and it was an eastern diamond back rattlesnake ..one bite enough to kill 6 men and this was” The Daddy” at this point a bit of panic set in and there was lots of scrambling around and by the time we had got the camera it was off on it’s merry way …..not a corn ,rat, or boa, a diamond back! i was no more than 3 feet away and now i’m just a little bit more wary 🙂 i told the yard man about it and he says he would have captured it and sold it for 7 dollars per pound. i think his surname must be ” muerte”! now who’s the crazy one? The next night Helen shouts me from the bedroom ” bring the camera”! ..well you can imagine my thoughts …. 20 years married and now we can start our own little “photo shoot ” alas my mojo was deflated instantly as she was peering at a red backed tarantula on the other side of the insect screen. I’d seen a documentary where tribes eat tarantula by burning the hairs off over a fire then they use the the mandibles as a tooth pick ..on this occasion he was allowed on his way…. not a meal today …. “No fangs” says H.
I was sat quitely thinking the other day …BIRD ISLAND surely some gringo named it due to the fact that it also had scantily clad females basking on it’s shores so i set off in the kayak again to INVESTIGATE ! we went to Chetumal this week and in Walmart we bought some walkie talkies so H can bend my ear when i’m outta view. we had to pick call signs …..i’m BIG DADDY ( not shirley crabtree) and H is SWEETPEA, so if anyone else has the same radio’s in the area dont be surprised to hear us calling one another. Anyway i get to “Bird Island” to realise maybe it was the amount of cormorants that bask on the rocks that got it’s name ( well not alot happens round it here it would have been nice 🙂 ) it’s low tide and there is no one else there so the locals know when to fish ..i wasn’t going to be lucky today . i took the camera so here is a photo of the “mystical island ” the fishing reel in the shot was my leaving present from work , which is put to good used most mornings (Thanks guys) 🙂
Zeus and the kids are doing fine although Phoenix seems a little under weight so we feed her seperately and she gets an extra scoop 🙂 Now Zeus AKA Einstein patiently waited by the shore the other day as i’d gone kayaking it was high tide and i’d left my shoes on the rocks i got back and they had been moved on to the high round by Zeus……….hmmm – maybe he’s not as dumb as H looks! 🙂 I put the toaster on the other day and out jumped a Gecko, “if you can’t stand the heat stay out of the kitchen” i said to it 🙂 H laughed and he scurried away. We got our 2nd extension stamp so we are 1/6 the way to applying for residency. I was very pleased with myself this week, got into a coconut in 5 mins, the yard man laughed and proceeded to dehusk one in about 40 seconds …looks like i have some more practising to do. The sun is back but there may be the last Hurricaine of the season building just south of us should be here by Wednesday if the conditions are favourable for it’s development. The guys came around to fit some bars to the windows this week and i was caught out being a jack ass! we had music thumping out and i was prancing about in the house busting some moves and H looked up and started laughing the guys were on the roof looking down on me and laughing (only the same as what happened in the Litten Tree for years 🙂
